Shepherd family manuscripts [manuscript] 1817-1883.

Correspondence of this and the related Farrar, Garland and Perkins families being chiefly that of Martin Baskett Shepherd (1801-1883) of Fluvanna County, Va. with his brothers Augustine, Jesse B., John, David Garland, James Meredith, Benjamin Armistead, Thomas and Joseph Henry; and his son James (John) Newton Shepherd (1834-1866). Correspondence with his brothers who removed from Fluvanna County to Wadesboro, N.C., Fayetteville, N.C., Richmond, Va., Granville, Tenn., Millican, Texas, Houston, Texas, and Nashville, Tenn. is particularly interesting on social and religious life, living conditions, and business and economic opportunities in these locales. James Newton Shepherd, after attending Valley Union Seminary, Botetourt Springs, Va., and the University of Virginia (1852-53), entered upon a pedagogic career, teaching at Hollins Institute, schools in Tallagedo, and White Plains, Ala., and as a language professor at Mt. Lebanon University, and President of Mt. Lebanon Female College, both in Louisiana. These letters regarding the early history of Hollins College, life at the University, which includes information on the curriculum, students, faculty, and other phases of University life; and teaching and living conditions in Louisiana, especially during the Civil War. Material regarding Fluvana County is enlightening on religious conditions, the Fork Church (Baptist), inhabitants, economic life, and travel. Other topics of interest are Baptist Church in Tenn. and Va., an excellent account of Virginians who settled in the Murfreesboro, Tenn. locale, catalog of books at the Sunday school in the Fork Union meeting house, estate of David Shepherd, "Autobiography of Martin Baskett Shepherd," letters regarding William M. Perkins, hiring Fluvana Co. negroes for work in his La. sugar refineries, and a large family genealogical chart. Correspondents include: A.P. Abell, Thomas Baker, Rev. James D. Coleman, H.K. Ellyson, Perrin Farrar, the Rev. James Fife, David S. Garland, Dr. R.B.C. Howell, Charlie Jones, Fannie Leftwich, Mrs. E.O. Mitchell, O.T. Mitchell, F. Newton, Joseph Perkins, William M.
